Choosing a Long Term Care Residence

Please contact the Specialty Care residence of your choice directly, to arrange for an opportunity to tour the home, and to meet with one of the knowledgeable, friendly staff to discuss how our services may be able to meet your health-care needs. Once you’ve decided that you would like to live in one of our communities of caring, you must make an application as outlined below.

Applying for admission: the next steps

  • To make an application for admission to a long term care centre in Ontario, you must contact the local Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) that is responsible for the area in which you presently live.
  • The CCAC staff will review the admission process with you, and co-ordinate all of the paperwork and assessments that may be required.
  • The CCAC will also monitor the waiting lists of the residences that you have chosen.
  • The CCAC will contact you when a room is available, and you can call us to discuss moving plans and any last-minute questions.
  • While the application process is done via the CCAC, we welcome your visits anytime.

Moving day: you can count on us for support

It’s exciting to be moving on to a new adventure in life, but moving to a new community can also be a bit stressful. Specialty Care staff realize that things can become somewhat overwhelming on moving day, so we try to take everything at a leisurely pace. Staff are available to assist you, as needed, to help you make a smooth transition during the first weeks.

We also invite your family to join you on your moving day, to help you feel more relaxed. You, or your substitute decision-maker, will be asked to review and sign a residency agreement that is required under the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and meets the standards of the Ontario Long Term Care Association. Each month, you will receive an itemized statement of the monthly fees that are set by the government, as well as any additional discretionary costs that you have, such as hair care or massage therapy. All costs will be fully explained to you so that you can plan your monthly expenses easily.

A warm welcome: we’ll make you feel at home

You will be welcomed by each of our managers over the first few days. Family and friends are welcome anytime. As staff get to know your interests and preferences, we will be able to offer suggestions to help you begin to feel settled in your new home. We hope to meet or exceed your expectations, and encourage you to share your suggestions for improving the services offered in the long term care residence that you choose.
